Brussels, 04/02/2008 (Agence Europe) - The president of the committee on civil liberties of the European Parliament, Gérard Deprez (ALDE, Belgium), on 31 January announced the timetable of the committee's work towards the conclusion of an inter-institutional agreement with the Commission and the Council on priorities in the space of justice, liberty and security (JLS) for the years 2008 and 2009. After the debate which was held on 31 January on progress in the JLS space, the three institutions declared that they were prepared to work towards an agreement of this kind, which has proved indispensable, given the turbulence likely in the field of justice and home affairs with the entry into force of the new treaty (EUROPE 9592). In this context, Mr Deprez stated that the draft resolution on progress in the JLS space, which will be put to the plenary to be held next March, will contain the essential elements of “an inter-institutional roadmap”. He went on to state that he intended to prepare an initial draft resolution for the forthcoming meeting of the LIBE committee, to be held on 11 February, and that a lunch would be held on 14 February with the coordinators, the permanent representatives of Slovenia, France and the Czech Republic, and with the vice-president of the European Commission, Franco Frattini. “During this meeting, we will see to what extent the Council is prepared to play the game, including as regards the possibility of a revision clause to be adopted before the end of the legislature for acts which currently come under the third pillar”, said Mr Deprez. The final draft resolution may be adopted by LIBE on 27 February (and not at the end of April as indicated in our bulletin 9592), on the eve of the JHA Council of 28-29 February, and moved to the plenary at its session to be held from 10-13 March.
