THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/sri lanka

04/02/2008 (Agence Europe) - The European Commissioner for external relations and European Neighbourhood Policy, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, condemned the attacks perpetrated this weekend in Colombo and Dambulla, which killed almost 30 people and injured hundreds. In a press release published on Monday 4 February, Ferrero-Waldner declared, “no support can ever be gained in the European Union for any cause through such acts of violence”. On the same day, while the country celebrated its sixtieth anniversary of independence, there were further explosions in the north east and south of the island, which cost the lives of at least fourteen people. Since the cease-fire signed in 2002 by the Sri Lankan authorities and Tamil Tigers, suicide attacks have multiplied against civilians. (A.B.)
