Commission proposes to amend TIR Convention

Brussels, 04/02/2008 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has adopted a draft decision modifying the Customs Convention on the International Transport of goods under cover of TIR carnets (TIR Convention 1975). The proposal seeks to remove differences of legal interpretation of vehicles “exported and therefore themselves considered as goods travelling by their own means”.

Managed by the Geneva-based United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, the TIR Convention set up a customs transit regime for international transport of goods by road. The convention allows goods on which duty and taxes have been suspended to cross international borders with minimum intervention by customs authorities during carriage. (M.B.)
