Slovenian presidency dismisses any correlation between the arrival of illegal immigrants and Schengen expansion

Brussels, 24/01/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 22 January, the Slovenian minister of the interior, Dragutin Mate, dismissed any link between enlargement of the Schengen area and the increase in illegal immigration from countries to the east of the EU. In an interview to EUROPE, Mate declared: “If there are people coming from third countries, it is because they were already in the Schengen area before 21 December”.
