18/12/2007 (Agence Europe) - EU citizens' attitudes to science news vary from country to country, according to a recent Eurobarometer survey on scientific research in the media. While 62% of respondents in the “old” EU member states said they were interested in scientific research, the figure fell to only 38% for those countries which have joined since 2004. The differences range from 80% in Sweden to just 24% in Bulgaria. The survey also shows a difference in the subjects of interest, with the newer member states more focused on information technology and space, whereas the pre-2004 member states showed higher levels of interest in medicine, environment and energy. Finally, television is the most popular (61%) and most trusted (47%) medium for information about science.
