14/12/2007 (Agence Europe) - The mayor and governor of Vienna, Austria, Michael Haupl, was re-elected president of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) on 5 December. 'I believe that together we have succeeded in making our voice heard more strongly' in recent years, he said in a press release published the next day. According to the CEMR, Michael Haupl will focus in his next term of office on strengthening the role of local and regional communities in Europe and promoting twinning between European towns. The CEMR explains that the twinning is 'a tool to strengthen European citizenship, equal opportunities and local and regional democracy'. (A.BY.)
