Brussels, 14/12/2007 (Agence Europe) - Directive 2007/64/EC on payment services, published at the beginning of December in the EU Official Journal, will be closely monitored by the European Commission during its transposition into member states' legal systems (see EUROPE 9523). Like with the process of implementing the Services Directive (see EUROPE 9512), the European Commission's internal market service will be organising transposition workshops with the member states and will be regularly consulting with industry to detect problems that might arise as the various measures are being introduced. They will also be setting up an interactive website to answer questions from institutional players and industry about the rules. EU Internal Market Commissioner Charlie McCreevy said in a press release that with the payment service directive now being published, the member states had to respect their pledges to implement the crucial directive by 1 November 2009. The payment services directive establishes legal bases in order to introduce a Single Euro Payment Area in 2010 (SEPA).
