THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/afghanistan

10/12/2007 (Agence Europe) - Determined to bring a long term solution to the Afghan people and government, the Council of the EU welcomed the progress achieved this year, although the security problem continues to threaten stability in the country. The conclusions adopted on Monday 10 December pointed out that Afghanistan has had strong economic growth, the media is generally free and solid, and progress has been made in health and education. However, the country is facing serious difficulties, particularly in the area of governance, rule of law, corruption and drugs, which EU foreign ministers say could threaten the progress that has been made.
