Brussels, 19/11/2007 (Agence Europe) - The General Affairs Council on Monday 19 November held a brief exchange of views on the EU-China and EU-India summits which are to be held on 28 November (Beijing) and 30 November (New Delhi) respectively. At these two summits the situation in Burma will be raised by the EU in the hope of convincing these two powers to bring their influence to bear on the Burmese junta, the president in office of the Council, Luis Amado, explained to the ministers. Dutch Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Verhagen demanded that the abolition of the death penalty also be raised by the EU at the summit in Beijing, along with China's role in Africa, particularly in Sudan. In the case of India, the Netherlands would also like the issue of child labour to be raised. (H.B.)
