Ferrero-Waldner, visiting Morocco, discusses European support for country's reform programme

Brussels, 08/11/2007 (Agence Europe) - On a three-day visit to Morocco, European External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner met the economy and foreign ministers in Rabat on Wednesday. Together they discussed the Moroccan government's work programme for the next five years and the financial support offered by the EU, reported MAP, the national press agency. According to Finance Minister Slaheddine Mezouar, the meeting allowed energy issues, the TGV (high speed train) project and EU financial support and accompanying measures for this project to be discussed. The minister repeated Morocco's call for “advanced status”. It was, he said, “a Moroccan ambition in which it is joined by a large number of EU member states”. According to MAP, Ferrero-Waldner announced the allocation of an additional €28 million under the European Governance Facility, set up as part of the European Neighbourhood Policy. She said that Morocco would receive an envelope of €654 million for the period from 2007 to 2013, “which makes it the largest recipient of funding from the European Partnership and Neighbourhood Instrument”. Talks also took place on the funding of various ministerial departmental projects (education, social development and justice). (F.B.)
