THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/serbia

09/11/2007 (Agence Europe) - A day after the initialling of the stabilisation and association agreement (EUROPE 9538), the president of the Serbian parliament, Olivier Dulic, came to Brussels on Thursday 8 November to provide the European commissioner, Olli Rehn, with assurances that his parliament was able to accomplish the significant amount of work needed for the application of the SAA, and push forward political and economic reforms required for preparing the country's future accession to the EU. Dulic informed the press: “I want to assure you that we will do all we can to create a positive atmosphere in our parliament in favour of European integration. Our parliament will be the driving force in the integration process. If the government intensifies its activities (reforms), we will be prepared to follow it” and adopt a new internal regulation at the beginning of 2008, he affirmed. Commissioner Rehn is optimistic as well. Although during the first months of 2007, the Serbian parliament was too often the theatre for “excessive nationalistic rhetoric”, the situation has recently improved. Mr Rehn said that “democratic rules are better respected” by the Serbian parties too. (H.B.)
