29/08/2007 (Agence Europe) - In a press release published on Tuesday 28 August, the EU “views with concern the recent arrests by the Government of Burma/Myanmar of several leaders of the opposition, notably from the group 'Generation 88'” for protesting against the sharp increase in prices of fuel and the economic problems which are crippling the Burmese. “The European Union condemns this decision to detain individuals who are exercising their basic right to peaceful demonstration”, the Portuguese Presidency added. It went on to reiterate calls on the new Rangoon regime immediately to free Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the leaders of the opposition and political prisoners, and to engage with all the different components of the Society of the country.
