THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/lebanon/syria

29/08/2007 (Agence Europe) - Michel Aoun, leader of the "Courant Patriotique Libre", one of the leaders of the opposition challenging the authority of the Prime Minister, Fouad Siniora, will be the guest of the delegation for relations with the Mashrek countries in Strasbourg on Wednesday 5 September. This institution of the European Parliament will take stock of the situation in Lebanon, which is affected by a persistent political block. It is planned that the Lebanese Parliament will meet on 25 September to elect a new Head of State to replace Emile Lahoud, who has been criticised for his relations with Syria. General Aoun, who is believed to be standing, has accused the parties of the majority in government (PSP and Les Forces Libanaises) of working to divide the country and lead it into confrontation. Furthermore, the EP delegation will put the finishing touches to preparations before the mission it is to send to Syria from 9 to 15 September 2007. (fb)
