Brussels, 29/08/2007 (Agence Europe) - The three representatives of the EP to the Intergovernmental Conference tasked with drafting the future Treaty the EU have assured José Manuel Barroso of their support to agree on a new text at the informal European Council of 18 and 19 October, as the Portuguese Presidency hopes to do (EUROPE 9474). “The Commission and the Parliament are committed to a successful meeting at the summit of Heads of State and Government on 18 and 19 October”, stated Elmar Brok (EPP-ED, Germany), Enrique Baron Crespo (PES, Spain) and Andrew Duff (ALDE, United Kingdom), further to their meeting, on Tuesday 28 August, with the President of the Commission. Weary of this informal discussion on a series of subjects from the draft modifying Treaty, “we also identified certain points together which we feel must be substantiated legally and/or politically”, state press release. With the work of the legal experts of the Member States due to resume this Wednesday (EUROPE 9477), the initial political exchanges of view will be held at the informal meeting of the Foreign Affairs Ministers outside Porto on 8 and 9 September.
