27/07/2007 (Agence Europe) - After the compromise found last week between the upper and lower houses of the US Congress, the US Senate approved, on Thursday 26 July, the package of security measures recommended by the 9/11 parliamentary commission, including the principle of scanning all container ships, cargo planes and passenger planes travelling to the United States before they leave foreign ports or airports. After formal adoption (that could still take place on Friday) by the House, to take effect the law must be signed by President George W. Bush. The Bush administration has criticised the lack of feasibility of the project (mainly the obligation that arises from it to set up monitoring equipment in over 600 foreign ports) but has never threatened to place a veto on the text.
