Brussels, 27/07/2007 (Agence Europe) -On Friday 27 July, the Socialist group at the European Parliament published a document in which it makes a number of recommendations for a genuine EU anti-terrorist strategy. In their 13 page document, MEPs present no less than 25 political recommendations for improving the anti-terrorist struggle while respecting citizens' rights. All these suggestions are covered in three sectors of activity: security and justice and protection of individual rights; EU external policy and the terrorist threat; preventive strategies focusing on social inclusion and dialogue. Among the recommendations are improvements for police cooperation, with a greater role for Europol and increased powers for the anti-terrorist coordinator (although the post previously occupied by Gijs de Vries from the Netherlands is still vacant). MEPs affirm that measures aimed at protecting personal data are expected to be introduced. Foreign policy actions include enhanced international cooperation for setting up a United Nations Convention on anti-terrorism, improving relations with the Arab world and implementing measures to speed up reform of the security sector in southern Mediterranean countries, while fostering EU economic and social development policies through trade, aid and investment. With the goal of promoting social inclusion, MEPs are appealing for an EU integration policy and charter to defend cultural, political and civil rights of migrants, including the right to vote in local elections.
