03/07/2007 (Agence Europe) - Elmar Brok (EPP-ED), Enrique Baron Crespo (PES) and Andrew Duff (ALDE) are to be the European Parliament's three representatives at the intergovernmental conference (IGC) which will begin on 23 July and is to finalise and adopt the new EU treaty, most probably at the informal European Council in Lisbon on 18-19 October. The appointments of Messrs Brok and Baron Crespo are guaranteed (the EPP-ED group has already made its formal decision and the PES group will do so on Wednesday), there could be further discussion within the Conference of the Presidents of the EP on Mr Duff's nomination, sources have said. In the meantime, the leader of the International European Movement (IEP), former EP President Pat Cox called on the Portuguese presidency to open IGC ministerial sessions to the public. “We know that the purely legalistic and technical sessions of lawyers do not necessarily need to be monitored by the public. But the most political debates during the IGC, where crucial decisions are taken, need public scrutiny,” he said. (hb)
