Commission sets out essential objectives to be defended at this year's World Radiocommunication Conference

Brussels, 03/07/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Monday, the European Commission adopted a communication establishing the EU's position on radio frequencies, with a view to the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) to be held from 22 October-16 November in Geneva under the aegis of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). At the conference, the world's 191 countries will decide how they will share the radio spectrum, notably for important application sectors such as mobile communications, broadcasting and air transport, for which European interests are at stake. In its communication, the Commission places emphasis on a number of objectives that the member states should seek to attain during the conference, including: - accommodating the spectrum demands of future terrestrial mobile systems by upgrading the status of these services in the UHF band; - providing enough spectrum for aviation applications; - and preparing actions to support Community policies for the next WRC Conference due in 2011 notably concerning spectrum flexibility, climate change and the Single European Sky. The main aim of the WRC held every three or four years is to update ITU radio regulations, a set of common rules agreed as an international treaty stipulating how this resource is to be shared globally.
