Brussels, 13/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - France will, “in the course of the next few days”, state its position on the proposal by the German presidency of the EU to open three new chapters - economic and monetary union (EMU), financial control, statistics - in accession negotiations with Turkey on 26 June. The next meetings of the Council's “enlargement” working group, which has to prepare the EU's common negotiating position, are scheduled for 15, 18 and 19 June, according to a Council source. The Coreper will then determine the EU's common position. On Wednesday a French spokesman in Brussels dismissed as “speculation” articles that had appeared in the press, suggesting that Paris intended to block the opening of talks on the EMU chapter. “No decision has been taken. The matter is currently under consideration and our position will be arrived at in the course of the next few days,” the spokesman told EUROPE. In the meantime, diplomatic sources at the Council have confirmed that France has already “spoken of difficulties” with regard to opening the chapter on the EMU during the preliminary discussions of the Council working group. Similarly, Cyprus has said it has problems over the chapter on “financial control”. (hb)
