Brussels, 07/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - The Commission has decided to resume talks on a Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) with Serbia on 13 June 2007. “I welcome the progress Serbia has made since the establishment of the new government in its cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY)”, reads a press release from José Manuel Barroso, Commission president. Announcement of the date comes further to the findings by Carla Del Ponte, ICTY Chief Prosecutor, in Belgrade in which she praises the “real political will” to arrest all persons sought by the ICTY (EUROPE 9440), although Ratko Mladic is still nowhere to be found. “I am glad that she (Ms Del Ponte) confirms that Serbia has now demonstrated clear commitment to full cooperation with the ICTY and that, in recent weeks, concrete actions have matched this commitment”, said Olli Rehn, enlargement commissioner, after his meeting with Ms Del Ponte. As he had pointed out last week (EUROPE 9437), Mr Rehn gave the date of the first talks without hesitation. “Next Wednesday, we shall hold the next round of discussions on this important agreement, which will bring economic and concrete benefits to Serbia”, as well as the opportunity of coming closer to EU membership, he added.
