07/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - The EP on Thursday agreed to the transposition of the main provisions in the Prüm Treaty (“Schengen II”) as part of the Union's legal framework. Transposition of this treaty will allow for a modern police information exchange system to be set up, through DNA data sharing, digital finger printing and vehicle registration numbers so that law enforcement agencies in the Union can fight more effectively against crime (EUROPE 9365). This initiative (decision), however is part of the EU's third pillar, in which Parliament only has an advisory role. The EP's legal affairs committee was requested to give an opinion and said that this legal basis was no longer appropriate and wanted to see a framework decision made, given that the measure or initiative aims at achieving approximation of legislative and regulatory provisions in member states.
