Council hopes to lift obstacles to development and use of information technologies

Luxembourg, 07/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - At the Telecommunications Council on Thursday 7 June, the Council of Ministers adopted a series of conclusions on the European Commission's communication entitled “i2010 - Annual Report 2007 on the information society”, dated 30 March 2007. The communication lays the foundations for mid-term review of the i2010 strategy in 2008, the digital chapter of the Lisbon strategy on growth and employment. Stressing the need for a voluntarist policy in the ICT area, the Council of the European Union invites the European Commission to draw up measures with a view to the 2008 review regarding the following aspects: - tackling obstacles that hamper investment in the new technologies, especially broad band networks, wireless technologies, Web 2.0 and internet-based services; - strengthening consumer confidence by ensuring greater security of technologies and by promoting interoperability of applications and services; - creating a single information area by lifting the obstacles to the provision of services within the European Union. The European Commission and the member states should also ensure that there is a propitious environment for the rapid emergence of high tech services such as radio frequency identification (RFID), mobile television and mobile commerce. Finally, they should encourage the standardisation and harmonisation of technical regulations, especially for the use of the radio-electric spectrum, by supporting the activities of the European and international standardisation bodies.
