BusinessEurope evokes future EMU challenges

Brussels, 01/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - The advantages of an Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) are undeniable but there are still challenges to be faced, BusinessEurope warns in a document published on Thursday. In the document, the organisation representing European business and employers mentions necessary areas of action for enhancing economic performance and improving eurozone governance. The question will again be on the agenda once the question of the treaty to improve the way the EU works has been settled, Ernest Antoine Seillière, president of BusinessEurope, told the press on Thursday. The credibility of the role of the European Central Bank (ECB) and the international status of single currency are among the achievements of the first eight years of EMU existence, the document points out, recalling that the rise in competitive differences and the lack of productivity growth are still problems to be addressed. Several recommendations are made in the document to the attention of member states, the Commission, the ECB, Eurogroup and social partners. Entitled, “Fit for the Euro: challenges to improve the economic performance of EMU”, the document is available at: http: //http://www.businesseurope.eu/Content/Default.asp ? (ab)
