Brussels, 29/05/2007 (Agence Europe) - Quoted by the Swiss German Sunday paper, Neue Zürcher Zeitung am Sonntag, the Polish president Lech Kacznski warned on Sunday that he was not ruling out blocking Russia's entry to the WTO if Moscow did not agree to a compromise on Polish meat exports to Russia. The Head of the Polish state declared that, “if Russia continues to refuse a compromise, which is the case until now, I do not rule this out”. He then explained, “Once again, we are not seeking confrontation with Russia. This is a myth”. The Union's green light expected by Moscow, to in part validate its entry to the WTO, remains suspended on several bilateral technical questions that have still not been settled (EUROPE 9422 and 9428). In a visit to Moscow at the end of March in an attempt to resolve certain trade points of friction with the Russian authorities, Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson downplayed the importance of the thorny question of the Russian embargo on Polish trade exports (as part of bilateral discussion for Russia's WTO accession). Moscow has banned imports of meat and other Polish imports of agricultural products on its territory for a year and a half, using the reason of false certificates. The Union's green light to Russia joining the WTO would require unanimity at the Council. (eh)
