04/04/2007 (Agence Europe) - As announced at the end of February (see EUROPE 9375), the European Commission adopted a draft regulation on Tuesday 3 April, transposing into EU law bluefin tuna stock recovery measures recommended last November by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). The new draft follows an initial draft published on 27 February 2007, amending a December 2006 Council Regulation which amended quotas for 2007 to bring them into line with ICCAT recommendations. At a meeting in Tokyo in January, ICCAT members agreed to grant the EU a 16,779.55 tonne quota for bluefin tuna for 2007. February's draft will bring the ICCAT recommendations into force this year, whereas the draft adopted on Tuesday will cover permanent measures for the recovery of bluefin tuna stocks that apply over more than one year.
