26/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - The Party of European Socialists (PES), which met for a “pre-Summit” meeting in Berlin on Saturday, adopted a declaration for the 50th anniversary of the EU, in which it affirmed that the creation of a, “New Social Europe must be the ambition of the EU for renewing and revitalising the European social model”. PES leaders also believe that Europe needs, “new policies to ensure that everyone can participate in, contribute to and benefit from our Europe”. The PES is also highlighting the need to provide the EU with a better treaty by 2009.
The European People's Party (EPP) met in Berlin on Saturday too and also adopted its own declaration for the anniversary of the Union (EUROPE 9390). (hb)
