THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/morocco/sahara

22/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 20 March, an incident brought the ambassador of Morocco with the EU, Menouar Alem, and the chairperson of the European Parliament delegation for cooperation with the Maghreb, Luisa Fernanda Rudi Ubeda (EPP-ED, Spain), into opposition. The Spanish MEP was organising an information meeting on the Sahara during which speakers included, in addition to the Moroccan ambassador, his Algerian counterpart, a representative of the pro-Algerian Sahraoui movement (Polisario) and a representative of the UN. Ms Ubeda refused to hear a pro-Moroccan Sahraoui movement, Corcas. Finally, only the UN representative was authorised to take the floor. The Moroccan ambassador states in a letter that he is “deeply shocked and amazed” and accuses Ms Ubeda of “flagrantly” showing bias. (fb)
