Brussels, 22/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament is to hold a public seminar on 26 March on EU/US relations with regard to data protection, and more specifically on the sensitive PNR, Swift and container security issues. Participants will look at the exact importance and scope of laws on the production and transfer of data on both sides of the Atlantic, and will raise questions on possible improvements in cooperation in the fields of security and the rights and freedoms of individuals. On this last point, some arguments point to extending the protection afforded by the Privacy Act to European citizens, and to extension of the protection conferred by Directive 95/46 to US citizens. Participants at the seminar include: Jean Marie Cavada (ALDE, France), Chair of the EP's LIBE committee; Jonathan Faull, Director at the Commission DG Justice/Freedom; Peter Hustinx, European Data Protection Supervisor; Peter Schaar, who chairs the Article 29 working group; as well as eminent academics and specialists on these matters.
