19/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - As part of the CeBIT conference on information technologies, held on Thursday 15 March in Hanover, Germany (see other article), telecommunications ministers from the European Union met up to discuss tele-visual mobile services. After highlighting the economic potential of this burgeoning market, Viviane Reding, the commissioner for the information society and media, called on member states to increase collaboration between themselves and “define a common strategy for comparing technologies and examining possible legal obstacles…”. Debates are currently focusing on the adoption of a single mobile broadcasting standard. There are currently two technologies competing on the market: T-DMB (Terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) and DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting for Handhelds), which both use different channels and frequencies. In an effort to clarify the strategy, the Commission will publish a communication in July this year. (gc)
