THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/georgia

05/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Monday, the European Union reaffirmed its “unreserved support” for the territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally-recognised borders, and stressed that it does not recognise the legitimacy of the “parliamentary elections” held in Abkhazia this weekend (4 March), nor that of the local elections held on 11 February 2007. “The European Union holds the view that elections in this region of Georgia can only be valid after all refugees and internally-displaced persons are given the right to a safe, secure and dignified return to their homes”, reads a press release published on 5 March. The EU calls on all parties involved immediately to resume negotiations with a view to reaching a peaceful solution to the conflict. (hb)
