Brussels, 05/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - Welcoming the formation of a new government in Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Foreign Affairs Ministers of the Twenty-Seven on Monday urged the authorities of the country to effect a swift and effective implementation of the conditions needed to conclude negotiations for a Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA), such as cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, constitutional reform and revision on legislation on radio broadcasting. “The political situation must continue to change and reforms must continue rapidly”, said the High Representative of the EU for CFSP, Javier Solana, after the meeting. In its conclusions, the General Affairs/External Relations Council “unreservedly” reaffirms Bosnia's European perspectives, and calls upon the country to “take its destiny in hand”. In particular, the ministers call for the Bosnian authorities to draw from the current impetus to move forward with police reform. On Monday, the Council also took note of the revised version of the plan for operation ALTHEA, which will allow progress to be made towards a gradual, but reversible, reconfiguration of EUFOR, the conclusions observed, adding that the EU will retain a military presence in the country in order to continue to contribute to keeping a climate of safety in place. In line with the plan to redeploy troops from the EUFOR-ALTHEA mission, which was agreed upon last week, 2500 troops will remain in place, with the support of reserve forces outside the theatre of operation.
