Brussels, 05/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - A letter has been sent to Benita Ferrero-Waldner, the European Commissioner in charge of External Relations, by Amira Dotan, an Israeli MP with responsibility for coordinating the Knesset's relations with the European Union, according to Saturday's edition of the Jerusalem Post. In the letter, Ms Dotan calls, on the eve of the forthcoming session of the EU-Israel Association Council, for ties to be strengthened. Israel, she writes, must become increasingly involved with the European Union, with which she hopes to see a “strong partnership” ballot. There is, she states, a natural basis to build up the relationship between Israel and the EU, as “the Europeans and the Israelis both develop similarly. The dilemmas facing both are identical”. According to the press, she justified her letter by explaining that she had hoped to make certain that she had got her message across to Ms Ferrero-Waldner when the latter visited Israel in late February. She is also said to have added that Israel has perhaps not done all that was required of it in order to become involved within the European Union. Ms Dotan had previously been posted to Brussels as a diplomat. The Israeli press also reported that Foreign Affairs Minister Tzipi Livni, who is said to have announced her intentions of calling on her European colleagues not to lift the economic boycott currently in place on the Palestinian Authority, has left for Brussels.
