Brussels, 08/02/2007 (Agence Europe) - On 7 February, the European Commission adopted a draft regulation to extend for two years Estonia's derogation on the fat content of drinking milk. Ten Member States currently have such derogations until 2009, but in 1997 Estonia was given the right until 30 April 2007 to produce milk with 2.5% fat (the 1997 regulation stipulates that full-fat milk must contain at least 3.5% fat). Nearly 93% of drinking milk produced and drunk in Estonia contains 2.5% fat and therefore cannot be sold in other member states. Estonia was only granted a derogation until 30 April 2007 (rather than 2009 like the other member states) for legal reasons. Under its Accession Treaty, Estonia was granted a three year derogation, but it recently asked the European Commission to extend the derogation until the end of the same transition period granted to the other member states (30 April 2009).
