Brussels, 08/02/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 8 February, the sugar management committee adopted a proposal to open an import quota of 200,000 tonnes of sugar to allow the chemical industry to buy sugar at world prices. EU industries are experiencing great difficulty in finding the amounts of sugar they require on the Community market. This measure was announced by the European Commission in December 2006 (see EUROPE 9332). The quota (without import duties) will be open until the end of the 2006-2007 marketing year (in September) and is justified by the chemical industry's being unable to find, in the EU, the quantities of sugar it needs at world prices.
