THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/constitution

31/01/2007 (Agence Europe) - The Young European Federalists (YEF) have spoken out against the practice of “Sherpas” chosen by the German Presidency of the EU to prepare the proposed compromise on the European Constitution, which Berlin intends to present to its European partners in June (for similarly critical reactions on the part of the MEPs, see EUROPE 9350). “The European citizens are being excluded from one of the most important political processes of the European Union”, the YEF states in a press release. The icing on the cake is that the names of the “Sherpas” appointed by the governments of the Member States are being “kept secret by the German government (…). This is a threat to the democratic process of the EU. The list needs to be published”, say the Young European Federalists, who are to publish a provisional and unofficial list of the names of Sherpas known to them at the following Internet address: http://www.jan-seifert.eu.
