Brussels, 31/01/2007 (Agence Europe) - The “Urban Transport: problems, solutions and responsibilities” conference opened in Brussels on 31 January. Bringing together some 400 stakeholders, it is the starting point of the debate on the urban transport Green Paper which the Commission will bring forward this autumn, according to Commission Vice-President Jacques Barrot. Mr Barrot, “confident that, while respecting the subsidiarity principle, the EU can provide added value to action taken at local level”, said that all the stakeholders would be consulted during the drafting process of the Green Paper and that their opinions would be taken into account. To gauge the various opinions, several technical seminars will be held, as well as a final conference in June 2007. The first seminar on urban transport and green power will take place this Wednesday. Three other seminars are scheduled: on funding of urban transport: the experiences of various towns; public transport, intermodality and intelligent transport; and integrated approaches to urban transport for successful and attractive cities. An online consultation process will be launched shortly. (ol)
