Visit of Secretary General of League of Arab states

Brussels, 24/01/2007 (Agence Europe) - José Manuel Barroso received the Secretary General of the Arab League Amr Moussa on Monday. On Tuesday the latter also met Louis Michel and Benita Ferrero Waldner. During a meeting with the press, Moussa reaffirmed the interest the Arab world attaches to the role the EU could play in finding a solution to the Middle East crisis. He underlined the closeness of the Arab League and EU's views on conditions for finding an overall peace agreement in the region, but also highlighted the fact that any attempt to isolate an Arab country was a dead-end (in a reference to the EU's relations with Syria). Mr Moussa appealed for the conclusions from the Baker-Hamilton report (US) to be taken into account, which calls for renewed dialogue with both Damascus and Tehran. He also addressed the Royal Institute for International Relations (IRRI) conference where he rejected the idea of a “clash of civilisations”. This notion belongs to the extremists of both sides, he stressed. On Iran, he recalled the Arab position which opposes any military use of the nuclear potential and calls on western countries to stop their practice of selective policy (a reference to Israel's possession of weapons of mass destruction). His choice is for a totally nuclear-free Mediterranean-Middle East zone. (fb)
