Javier Solana appeals for dialogue to resolve crisis

Brussels, 24/01/2007 (Agence Europe) - Javier Solana is keeping a concerned eye on the worsening situation in the Republic of Guinea. In a press release of 23 January, the High Representative of the EU “calls on the Guinean authorities to show maximum restraint in the current circumstances in order to preserve the chances of dialogue, the only possible way of obtaining a peaceful and lasting resolution to the crisis in this country. This situation is not just impacting on civilians in Guinea but could also destabilise the whole of this sub-region, which has been hit hard by recent crises, such as those in Sierra Leone and Liberia or in ongoing crises like the one in Ivory Coast”. (Own translation). This press release was published in reaction to the bloody repression by Guinean forces, on 22 January, of order during demonstrations organised as part of the general strike that began on 10 January.
