Brussels, 24/01/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, the EU declared that it was “extremely concerned” by the missile recently launched by China that destroyed one of its satellites. In a declaration published by the German presidency the EU stated: “The testing of an anti-satellite weapon is incompatible with international efforts to prevent an arms race in space, where security could be compromised”. The EU affirmed that it is important to ensure security in space and to prevent an arms race. It also said that it was prepared to contribute to achieving this objective. The exploration and use of space, including the moon and other planets “has to be done exclusively in the pursuit of peaceful ends and for the wellbeing and interest of all countries”. China is due to sign The Hague Code of Conduct against the proliferation of ballistic missiles, explained the EU. (hb)
