11/12/2006 (Agence Europe) - The Greek MEP Ioannis Varvitsiotis (EPP-ED) has spoken out in criticism of the fact that the recent Justice and Home Affairs Council failed to reach an agreement on the transfer of people convicted of a crime (see EUROPE 9321). "I am very disappointed at this result, which is due to just one country, Poland (...). It is very sad to see such a long and difficult process ending without a result", said Mr Varvitsiotis in a press release on 7 December. Mr Varvitsiotis's report on the subject had been adopted by the EP by 488 votes in favour and 53 against. He hoped that a positive result may be possible under the German Presidency. He feels that this failure lays even greater emphasis on the problems caused by the fact that the European Constitution has not been adopted, which would have facilitated decision-making in this field.
