11/12/2006 (Agence Europe) - The EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Defence Policy is the winner of the 2007 Charlemagne Prize, the Mayor of Aachen and jury spokesman Jürgen Linden announced in a press release on Saturday. This German prize, which will be awarded to Javier Solana on 27 May 2007, recognises an individual who or an action which makes a significant contribution to European unity. The High Representative, who was appointed in 1999, has been rewarded for his contribution to the enlargement of the EU and his diplomatic work in the Balkans and the Middle East. On Monday, Karl vonWogau (EPP-ED, Germany, chairman of the European Parliament's security and defence sub-committee congratulated the jury on its choice. (ol)
