Brussels, 16/11/2006 (Agence Europe) - According to a source in Geneva, the delegations of the 149 WTO member nations agreed on Thursday to resume informal discussions at technical level within the framework of Doha talks, i.e. at the level of the negotiating committees (agriculture, manufactured goods, services, trade facilitation). This was the first plenary meeting of the delegations devoted to the Doha Talks since they were suspended in July this year. WTO Director General Pascal Lamy nonetheless warned that political negotiation would only replace “silent diplomacy” in Geneva once the members of the G-6 (EU, USA, Brazil, India, Australia and Japan) have taken firm commitments on new concessions. It would seem, however, that a move toward resuming political discussions has begun given the increased number of contacts between G-6 negotiators. Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson is to be in Delhi on Friday where he will be meeting Indian Trade Minister Kamal Nath. After stopping off in Japan, the Australian Minister for Trade, Warren Truss, will be meeting Mr Mandelson on 23 November in Brussels. (eh)
