THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/treaty of rome/languages

16/11/2006 (Agence Europe) - Speaking on French television, the European elected member of Forza Italia, Alfredo Antoniozzi, expressed solidarity with French European Affairs Minister Catherine Colonna, who had spoken out indignantly against the publication, in English only, of “Together since 1957”, the logo for the 50th anniversary of the Treaty (today, however, the logo proposed by the young Polish graphic artist, Szymon Skrzypczak, is available in all official EU languages) (see A Look Behind the News EUROPE 9297). The famous trilingual English-French-German system “cannot work as, when there are no written rules, it is natural for one linguistic lobby to prevail over the others”, the MEP Alfredo Antoniozzi said, saying he had received considerable protest from Italian business people or researchers who “complain of having to work with notices for competitions or public procurement that are only in French or English”, which obviously gives “an enormous advantage” to those interested when their mother tongue is French or English.
