Council takes note of postponement of decision on status

Brussels, 13/11/2006 (Agence Europe) - Informed on Monday by the UN Special Representative for Kosovo of his intention to postpone the decision on the status of the Serbian province, the Foreign Affairs Ministers noted that Martti Ahtisaari had made a decision which is likely to "reduce all destabilising effects in the region", as Erkki Tuomioja told the press after the EU Council which he chaired. In Vienna last Friday, Martti Ahtisaari, came to an agreement with representatives of the contact group on the future of Kosovo to postpone the presentation of his proposals until after the elections due to take place in Serbia on 21 January 2007. This decision had initially been planned for the end of the year, but it now seems better to postpone it, since the announcement of the timetable for the Parliamentary elections , in order to avoid promoting Serbian ultra-nationalist discourse. Asked about the issue, which was discussed at length by the ministers over lunch, the High Representative for CFSP, Javier Solana, declined to specify whether an additional postponement was in the offing, explaining that responsibility for this lay with the UN Special Representative. Serbia is to hold its presidential elections at the end of 2007, but the decision taken by Mr Ahtisaari does not necessarily mean that the decision will be postponed further, Mr Solana pointed out cautiously.
