Brussels, 13/11/2006 (Agence Europe) - As announced by the Commissioner for Industry, Günter Verheugen, speaking before the committee on legal affairs of the European Parliament early in October (EUROPE 9281), the European Commission will this Tuesday adopt its strategic global examination of the "Better Regulation" initiative, which was launched in March 2005 (EUROPE 8911). This examination aims to analyse progress made to date after two years of work and to unveil the forthcoming stages and new measures planned. Since his address to the EP, Mr Verheugen has several times told the press that he is to propose, amongst other things, a new package to "radically simplify" Community legislation and send unnecessary legislation "to the scrapheap" with the objective of reducing the burden of red tape on businesses by as much as 25%. It is worth noting that the "Better Regulation" initiative is based on four pillars: withdrawing proposals pending in the inter-institutional canal, the complete revision of the Community legal acquis (simplification of existing legislation and codification), impact assessment of any new legislative proposal and measuring the administrative burden.
