Brussels, 07/11/2006 (Agence Europe) - After the favourable opinion by the European Parliament on 26 October (according to emergency procedure, EUROPE 9296), the EU Council of Ministers adopted without debate, on Tuesday 7 November, the regulation allowing for a one year extension until 31 December 2006 of the conditions for paying subsidies to fishing fleets in very outlying regions (Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands and French overseas departments of Guyana and Reunion). This regulation takes into account the compromise reached on the European Fisheries Fund (EFF) for the period 2007-2013 (EUROPE 9247 and 9242). Public aid for the building of new fishing vessels has been extended by one year, until end 2006, but solely in the very outlying regions (in continental Europe, this has been banned since 1 January 2005).
