Strasbourg, 30/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - By adopting a resolution on Thursday 26 October on the trial of Rios Montt, the European Parliament is calling on the Guatemalan authorities to fully cooperate and do all in its power to bring to light human rights violations perpetrated in the conflict of the 1990s, which left around 200,000 Maya as victims. It is calling for those responsible to be brought to justice and cites: José Efrain Rios Montt, Oscar Humberto Mejia Victores, Angel Anibal Guevara Rodriguez, German Chupina Barahona, Pedro Garcia Arredondo and Benedicto Lucas Garcia, who have all been accused of crimes of genocide, torture, terrorism and illegal imprisonment. Parliament is calling for the full cooperation of the governments and leaders of the banking establishments concerned, in the seizure of assets and property belonging to the accused individuals, so that the latter assume their civil and financial responsibilities. It also invites Interpol and Europol to provide the necessary extradition resources, if this is requested by the competent authorities. (oj)
