Brussels, 30/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - The Community Fisheries Control Agency, which is based in Vigo, Spain, adopted its first work programme on 27 October. This agency, which was created in a decision formalised in March 2005 (EUROPE 8908), will start its work early next year with an annual budget of 5 million EUR. For 2007, it plans to concentrate its efforts on the observation of reconstitution measures for cod stocks, the protection of bluefin tuna, the fight against illegal fishing, putting an end to destructive fishing practices and disposals at sea (of fish). The agency will take charge of the operational coordination of inspection and control activities for fisheries threatened by the Member States and thus help the countries of the EU to improve their cooperation in order to ensure that the rules of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) are respected.
