THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/congo

27/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - The EU High Representative for the CFSP Javier Solana has called on the Congolese people to turn out in large numbers on Sunday 29 October to vote in a similar climate of calm and dignity to that of the first round of voting in July. “Sunday's second round of voting in the Presidential elections will mark a turning point for the Congolese people, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Africa as a whole. What is at stake is indeed of historic proportions … Both candidates in the second round carry a huge responsibility towards their people and also towards the continent of Africa. The EU has walked with the Democratic Republic of Congo all the way along the peace process. It recognises the great distance that the whole country has already travelled. It will remain at the side of the Democratic Republic of Congo after the elections to support the efforts of the Congolese people and their leaders in the reconstruction of a prosperous and peaceful country, worthy of its place in the concert of African nations,” he said.
