Strasbourg, 27/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 26 October, the European Parliament unanimously adopted (66 votes) a resolution on Tibet, condemning the disproportionate force used by the Chinese People's Armed Police, which fired on unarmed Tibetan civilians, including children. It expressed its shock at the arrest of Tibetan civilians, nine of whom are children. It called on the Chinese authorities to conduct an in-depth investigation into the incident which took place in the Nangpa la Pass and to ensure that, if necessary, those responsible are brought to justice. It called on the Council and the Commission, through their representation in Nepal, to monitor very closely the situation of the Tibetans in the group which reached Nepal and to protest vigorously to the Chinese authorities about this incident as part of the EU-China dialogue on human rights. The Parliament called on the government of the People's Republic of China to continue its dialogue with the representatives of the Dalai Lama, with a view to improving respect for religious, cultural, linguistic and political rights in the autonomous region of Tibet.
